Who We Are
Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union (AFECU) was founded in October 1952 in Lufkin, Texas, initially serving federal employees. It started as a member-owned cooperative with just ten postal workers, and its operations were managed by R.V. Welch, the local postmaster, from his desk. By 1956, AFECU had relocated to a broom closet inside the federal building and was operating from a cigar box.
As membership grew, the credit union moved to a new location on Moody Street in the early 1980s. AFECU soon outgrew that space, leading to the move of its current building, which opened in 1994.
As of September 2024, AFECU has expanded its membership eligibility to include not only federal employees and their families but also individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in Angelina, Tyler, Trinity, Cherokee, San Augustine, Nacogdoches, Jasper, Houston, and Polk Counties.

AFECU's field of membership includes individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in the following counties: Angelina, Tyler, Trinity, Cherokee, San Augustine, Nacogdoches, Jasper, Houston, and Polk. It also extends to federal and postal employees, as well as their immediate family members, working or residing in Angelina, Cherokee, Houston, Jasper, Liberty, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, Tyler, and Walker Counties.

Q: How do I join Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union?
A: To become a member of the credit union, contact the credit union at (936) 632-7691 or (800) 569-9799. You must open a share (savings) account with a minimum of $25 initial deposit. To remain a member, you must maintain a $25 balance in your account and demonstrate regular activity. You will have access to all of our services once you open your share (savings) account.
Q: How long do I have to be a member before I can apply for a loan?
A: You may apply for a loan as soon as you become a member. There are no membership time requirements for loan qualifying.
Q: How do I add/remove a joint member to/from my account?
A: To add a member you will need to complete a new signature card, which you and the joint member sign where indicated. To remove a joint member, all joint members of the account need to agree to the removal, or the account can be closed and remaining joint members may open a new account.
Q: I no longer work for the Federal Government, can I still retain my membership?
A: Yes! “ONCE A MEMBER – ALWAYS A MEMBER” You are still able to continue your membership, regardless of any new profession or where you live.
Q: Can I send an email to Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union?
A: You Should Avoid Sending Personal Information via Unsecured Email:
- Email is not always secure – Standard email is transmitted over the internet without encryption, meaning it can be intercepted and read by unauthorized individuals.
- Risk of identity theft and fraud – Sending sensitive information like Social Security numbers, financial details, or passwords over unsecured email could expose you to identity theft or financial loss.
- Hacking and phishing risks – Hackers often target email accounts, and if personal information is shared through unsecured means, it becomes an easier target for exploitation.
- Use encrypted email services – Many email providers offer encryption features (e.g., Gmail's Confidential Mode or Outlook’s encryption options) to keep your messages safe.
- Share sensitive info through secure platforms – For sharing personal or financial information, consider using secure messaging apps, file-sharing services with encryption (e.g., Dropbox or Google Drive), or dedicated portals provided by the organization or service you’re communicating with.
- Avoid including personal details in the subject line – Even if your email is not encrypted, try to avoid including sensitive information in the subject line, as it may be exposed in transit or by email preview features.

Convenient – No more waiting for the mailman. Your deposits will be made for you automatically, allowing you to set your own timetable for getting cash.
Q: How do I apply?
A: Our Member Service Representatives have all the necessary forms. If you wish, they will be happy to fill them in for you. All you have to do is tell them how you want your money distributed and sign your name. AFECU will take care of everything else.
Q: How will I be able to keep track of my money?
A: Your check stub from your employer is your permanent record. You may also enroll in online banking to have access to your accounts.
Q: Is there a charge for this service?
A: This service is free to all participating AFECU members.
