About Us
Who We Are
Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union was established in October of 1952 in Lufkin, Texas for federal employees. We began as a member-owned and operated financial cooperative with a membership of ten postal workers. R.V. Welch, Postmaster of the Lufkin United States Postal Service at the time ran the operations of the credit union from his desk all while attending his job duties as postmaster for the local post office. In 1956 the credit union relocated to a broom closet inside the federal building operating out of a cigar box. With continued growth Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union relocated to the Moody Street location in the early 1980’s. AFECU quickly outgrew that facility and broke ground for the Pershing location in 1993. The credit union opened at its current location in 1994.
Closing the first year of business in 1953 the credit union had fifty-five members and $5,174.80 in total assets. After 70 years of providing services to federal employees, family members and extended family members Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union has grown to 2540 members with assets exceeding $39.4 million.
Today, AFECU continues to serve federal employees, family members and extended family members. The credit union has one location in Lufkin with a full array of online services and Automated Teller Machines in various locations to serve our member’s needs.
Our credit union exists to provide a secure place for members to manage their finances. This was the foundation upon which Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union was formed and remains the primary focus of our operation.
Angelina Federal Employees Credit Union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration and is an Equal Housing Lender.
